Ironically, last week, I had two patients in the same day ask me what the vertical lines they saw in their front teeth were. They were concerned that their teeth were cracked. These lines, which vary in every individual, are craze lines. They are small cracks in the outermost enamel layer of the tooth and require no treatment. Craze lines are caused by normal wear and tear, grinding and clenching. If those lines were to deepen and start causing pain, the tooth would then be considered to have a crack and would require treatment.
